During his time at Stanford, Altman dropped out to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions. In 2005, at the age of 19, he co-founded Loopt, a location-based social networking app. Loopt gained popularity and received funding from prominent venture capital firms, eventually being acquired by Green Dot Corporation in 2012.

After the acquisition of Loopt, Altman became involved in various other ventures and investments. He co-founded the location-based social network "Zenbe" and worked as CEO until the company shut down in 2010. Altman also invested in several successful startups, including Airbnb, Reddit, and Pinterest, through his early-stage venture capital firm, Y Combinator.

In 2014, Altman joined Y Combinator as its president. Y Combinator is a startup accelerator and venture capital firm based in Silicon Valley, known for its role in helping launch numerous successful companies. As president, Altman played a crucial role in shaping the organization and supporting the growth of countless startups.

In 2019, Altman stepped down as president of Y Combinator to focus on a new project. He announced the formation of OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research company aiming to ensure the safe and beneficial development of AI technologies. Altman became the CEO of OpenAI, leading the organization in its mission to advance artificial intelligence while considering its potential impact on society.

Aside from his work in the tech industry, Altman is known for his involvement in various philanthropic initiatives. In 2015, he signed the Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of his wealth to charitable causes. He has also supported organizations focused on improving education, combating poverty, and promoting effective altruism.

Anandan asked Altman for his guidance on the potential for Indian startups to develop foundational AI models, saying, "Sam, India has a thriving ecosystem, particularly in AI. Are there opportunities for Indian startups to build their own foundational AI models, and how should we approach this?"
