She was known not just for her immaculate accent but also for her calm and poise

 Gitanjali Aiyar, one of the prominent faces of Doordarshan's prime-time news at 9 p.m. for decades, exemplified grace and dignity in television news before news studios became intense and news presenters engaged in shouting matches.

With her impeccable accent, fluency, and calm demeanor, Gitanjali stood out as a newsreader in an era when teleprompters were not yet common in news studios. Even when they were introduced, technical glitches would occasionally disrupt live broadcasts, but Gitanjali remained composed.

Beginning her career with All India Radio, Gitanjali joined Doordarshan in 1971. Her exceptional skills as an anchor earned her the title of the best anchor on four occasions, and she was also honored with the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989

Gitanjali Aiyar, one of the pioneering female news presenters on India's national broadcaster Doordarshan, has passed away. She is survived by her son and daughter, Pallavi Aiyar, an acclaimed journalist in her own right.

1. 1. After graduating from Kolkata's Loreto College, Gitanjali joined Doordarshan in 1971, where she garnered recognition as the best anchor four times. In 1989, she was honored with the prestigious Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women. Gitanjali was also a diploma holder from the National School of Drama (NSD).

   2. In addition to her news presenting roles, Gitanjali was a well-known figure in print advertisements and even acted in Sridhar Kshirsagar's TV drama 'Khandaan'. Throughout her remarkable career spanning several decades, she maintained an association with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
